Bone Grafting & Ridge Preservation

After a tooth is removed, the surrounding bone can shrink. A bone graft places biocompatible material in the socket to preserve volume for appearance, function, and future treatments such as implants.

Understanding your care

Socket Preservation

Ridge preservation at the time of extraction may help preserve bone volume after tooth loss.

Ridge Augmentation

Minor ridge augmentation addresses localized bone defects to restore a more natural contour to your jaw.

Implant Preparation

Bone grafting may support future treatment planning. Implant placement, if needed, is performed by an appropriate outside provider.

Biocompatible Materials

We use safe, proven grafting materials that integrate with your natural bone to stimulate new bone growth.

Monitored Healing

Most grafts heal over 3–4 months. We monitor your progress and guide you through each step of recovery.

Preserves Facial Structure

Maintaining jawbone volume prevents the sunken facial appearance that can occur after tooth loss.

Your Treatment Plan

Ask our team which bone-grafting options can be provided for your case and whether referral is recommended. We do not perform surgical implant placement. Placement is referred to an appropriate provider when needed.

FAQ

Common Questions

Need more info? Call us at (703) 820-8282

Is bone grafting painful?

Local anesthesia may be used when appropriate. Tell our team about concerns before treatment; we explain comfort measures and aftercare based on your needs. We do not offer sedation dentistry.

How long does healing take?

Most bone grafts heal over 3–4 months before implant placement can be considered. We'll monitor your healing and let you know when you're ready for next steps.

Is a bone graft always needed before an implant?

Not always. If you have sufficient healthy bone, an implant may be placed without grafting. Dr. Tekle will evaluate your bone density and recommend the best approach.

What are the grafting materials made of?

We use biocompatible materials that may include processed human donor bone, bovine bone, or synthetic materials. All are thoroughly tested and proven safe for dental use.
